Choose a wood and finish that will work well with the rest of the room and isn't distracting to you. Finally, try to avoid anything very cheap. Cheap desks are likely to be made out of cheap materials, and they will break down very quickly. It's better to spend more money now than to have to go out again soon and buy a whole new desk.
